La noticia fue confirmada por su familia a través de un comunicado difundido en medios estadounidenses. El músico había estado internado en un hospital de Morristown, Nueva Jersey, donde permaneció con sus seres queridos hasta sus últimos momentos.
Semanas antes, el propio Frehley había comunicado a sus seguidores en redes sociales que se encontraba "bien", aunque, por recomendación médica, debía suspender temporalmente sus presentaciones. Días más tarde, una segunda publicación confirmaría la cancelación definitiva de las fechas que tenía programadas para el resto del año.

En 1973, junto a Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley y Peter Criss, formó KISS, la banda que alcanzó la fama gracias a su característico maquillaje, sus shows en vivo y su sonido entre el hard rock y el glam rock. Cada integrante asumía un personaje: Simmons era 'The Demon', Stanley 'The Starchild', Criss 'The Catman' y Frehley 'The Spaceman', el alter ego que lo inmortalizó.
Tras conocerse su fallecimiento, amigos, colegas, bandas y figuras del mundo de la música comenzaron a expresar en redes sociales sus mensajes de despedida y homenaje al legendario artista.
